Last week, BTA President Maria Luisa O’Connell attended a forum on the border fence sponsored by the Texas Border Coalition. At the meeting various stakeholders including farmers and ranchers, landowners, border communities and environmentalists met to discuss the construction of the border fence by the Department of Homeland Security. David Aguilar, Chief of the Border Patrol, also attended the meeting and gave a presentation on the fence and opened the door to input from stakeholders.
Access to water and water rights and the placement of the fence were among the primary concerns raised by landowners. Environmental groups raised concerns of the effect of the fence on wildlife and ecotourism.
