Failing to generate enough support to end debate on two separate occasions yesterday on the comprehensive immigration reform bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) pulled the legislation from the floor. Though possible, the Senate is not likely to revisit the measure this year. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that the House will not bring up immigration reform until the Senate is able to pass a bill.
The divisive issue has split both political parties, the business community, labor groups and immigration supporters. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center finds that 55 percent of Americans support increased penalties on employers as the most effective way to reduce illegal immigration. Twenty-five percent support increasing the number of border agents and only 7 percent support the construction of additional border fencing as a means to control immigration.
