Last week the BTA sent House Members a letter opposing an amendment offered by Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) to the FY08 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill. The amendment would prohibit the development of the alternative passport documents or PASS Card and the use of other secured traveler documents, such as FAST and SENTRI cards, in lieu of a passport under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). The BTA supports the development of the PASS Card and the ability to use other secured traveler documents issued by the federal government for WHTI. The BTA continues to advocate for the careful consideration of the impact of WHTI on border communities, which are integrally linked to cross-border tourism and industry and for additional outreach by DHS to educate the public about the program’s requirements.
