BTA Policy Coordinator quoted in Texas AP article on WHTI

The impending rule in January has rankled residents, city and business officials, particularly those in border states, where people frequently cross into Canada or Mexico to shop, dine, visit relatives or attend events.

The Phoenix-based Border Trade Alliance has advocated delaying the passport requirement at land and sea ports until June 2009. The alliance wants assurance the technology is working and studies done on the economic impact on border communities.

“We hope the pressure is not to meet a deadline, but to make sure everything is in place and is implemented smoothly so it meets its fundamental goal of improving security,” said Diana Lauritson, policy and project coordinator.
