BTA CHAIR
Erin Martin Ward
Erin Martin Ward has participated in the Border Trade Alliance since 2000 and was elected chairwoman in 2008.
Erin Martin Ward serves as director of U.S.-Mexico Border Outreach and Project Coordination for New Mexico State University where she works under the direction of the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute. She has 18 years experience in the research and publication of policy and technical reports that address the needs of border communities. She is a founding member of the Southwest Consortium for Research and Policy (SCERP), the largest and longest-running U.S.-Mexico research consortium and is considered an expert on border environmental affairs. Ms. Ward is active in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Border 2012 Program and serves as U.S. leader of EPA’s regional Environmental Education Task Force.
Ms. Ward began working with the Border Trade Alliance in the late 1990’s where she prepared one of the first research analyses describing the significance of border trade to the U.S. domestic economy, highlighting the need for federal investment in border infrastructure and environmental improvements. Prior to becoming chair of the organization, she served as chair of the BTA’s environment and health committee.
Before joining NMSU, Ms. Ward worked as a news writer for the Associated Press and Scripps-Howard newspapers in the United States and Mexico.
Ms. Ward holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and an M.A. in technical communication from NMSU, Las Cruces. Ms. Ward lives in Las Cruces, NM, with her husband Frank Ward; daughters Cordelia, Hilary and Evelyn; and stepson Ryan.
