Border Trade Alliance urges U.S. and Canada to return to the negotiating table

The BTA on Aug. 27, 2026 sent this letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that cites our strong concerns about the U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and the risk for economic harm to both countries and the potential damage to North American competitiveness.

As we state in the letter, USMCA brought North American trade into the 21^st century. A steep tariff regime on one of the U.S.’ closest trade partners, not to mention a neighbor and ally, threatens to unwind that progress.
