What We Do at the Border Trade Alliance
Since 1986, the Border Trade Alliance (BTA) has united leaders from border communities, business, and government to advance practical, experience-based trade and border policy solutions that strengthen economic growth and security.
Influencing Federal Policy and Legislation
We advocate, educate, and collaborate to ensure border communities have a strong voice in national policy decisions.
- Federal participation: BTA members serve on key advisory committees and task forces, helping shape trade and border policy.
- Policy implementation: We remain engaged after laws are passed to ensure federal agencies implement policies that support cross-border trade and security.
- Legislative collaboration: Lawmakers rely on BTA’s expertise when crafting trade-related legislation and appropriations. BTA was the first non-governmental organization to address legislators at the U.S.–Mexico Binational Commission.
- Congressional engagement: Through briefings, testimony, and ongoing dialogue, we make sure border trade perspectives are heard and understood in Washington.
Expanding Awareness and Building Partnerships
We elevate the importance of border trade issues and connect the public and private sectors to find real solutions.
- Media awareness: BTA expands awareness of cross-border trade through national and regional media, digital outreach, and social media.
- Public–private partnerships: We unite governments and private stakeholders to identify and implement improvements in infrastructure and trade programs.
Empowering Border Communities
We amplify local voices, promote collaboration, and transform community insights into national policy impact.
- Grassroots representation: We work directly with border communities to ensure their real-world experiences inform policy decisions.
- Shared cross-border interests: We bring together leaders from both sides of the border to exchange best practices and foster cooperation.
- BTA events: Our forums along the northern and southern borders connect local stakeholders with policymakers and provide updates on federal actions that affect them.
- Expert policy committees: Our committees of industry and policy experts shape the advocacy priorities BTA carries to Capitol Hill each year.
