The BTA strongly supports a multi-modal trade environment, so we are  alarmed at delays of northbound trains originating in Mexico that have been boarded by migrants. In our April 29, 2024 letter to the Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., the BTA writes:

We urge the Government of Mexico to provide the resources necessary to remove migrants from trains before they near the U.S. border, and ultimately deter them from utilizing freight trains to move within Mexico. As we witnessed in late 2023, large numbers of migrants arriving simultaneously near international ports of entry threatens the smooth operation of cross-border trade and could lead to closures of rail crossings between our two nations.

The ambassador’s office has acknowledged receipt. We look forward to discussing this matter with him in greater detail soon.
